The slow march of progress
SCSI 4X cd burner purchased in 1999 - $350

IDE 16X DVD burner purchased this week - $40

Installing the burner, screwing the computer case back on, and THEN realizing that you forgot to write down the serial number on the top of the burner - Priceless

Let me guess, you went to Fry's...
Brian Beckseether on March 21st, 2006 04:41 pm (UTC)
Nah, I Newegg'd it...the less I visit Fry's, the happier my family is.

Ahh, true.

This whole thing reminds me of my first burner..

HP 1x scsi, it cost me $800 at Best buy in 1996.

I think I might still have it in a box someplace.
Brianwc on March 21st, 2006 04:55 pm (UTC)
I think I paid $500 for my 4x IDE burner in 1997... my how times have changed. Now we have $500 HD-DVD and BluRay burners to look forward to, coupled with astronomical media prices.
Brian Beckseether on March 21st, 2006 05:01 pm (UTC)
It almost makes me long for those care free bachelor days when "disposable income" was in large supply.

Almost.

I think it almost scares me a little to think that I spent almost $1500 building my first system back in 1998...I can imagine Crystal finding new and inventive ways to disembowel me were I to attempt something like that today.
Brianwc on March 21st, 2006 05:08 pm (UTC)
No kidding. I don't think I'll ever completely rebuild my machine, I'll just keep upgrading a component here or there as needed.
Just meslvr on March 21st, 2006 05:06 pm (UTC)
*cough* you paid? and it was 98 ;)
Brianwc on March 21st, 2006 05:10 pm (UTC)
Indirectly, yes. You put it on Best Buy... which I'm sure we're still paying on in one form or another. I couldn't remember if it was a engagement gift or a wedding gift. Now that I think about it, you gave me the watch for our engagement gift.
Just meslvr on March 21st, 2006 05:15 pm (UTC)
I know, but it was my idea ;)
Brianwc on March 21st, 2006 05:17 pm (UTC)
Actually, you were just buying me something you knew I wanted. :P
Just meslvr on March 21st, 2006 05:20 pm (UTC)
yah, but I coulda bought you a tie ;)
Brianwc on March 21st, 2006 05:25 pm (UTC)
yeah, you could have... and I could have just bought you a sweater instead of that spa package I got you. :P
Just meslvr on March 21st, 2006 05:28 pm (UTC)
we're talkin 7 years difference here honey... You OWED me that spa package ;)
Brianwc on March 21st, 2006 05:29 pm (UTC)
Really now... So what else do I owe you exactly?
Just meslvr on March 21st, 2006 05:30 pm (UTC)
a million trillion bucks! (but we'll discuss that later and not in brian's post ;))
Brian Beckseether on March 21st, 2006 05:33 pm (UTC)
Nah, keep it up! It'll look great to see 20+ comments to my trivial post! :)
RoXXenroxxen on March 21st, 2006 05:46 pm (UTC)
hahah...

I was like 20+ comments??
Brian Beckseether on March 21st, 2006 05:49 pm (UTC)
and to think I'll follow this up by not posting for a good 2 months.
Brianwc on March 21st, 2006 05:33 pm (UTC)
Oh you're no fun. I bet some great gossip could come from this thread! ;)
Just meslvr on March 21st, 2006 05:34 pm (UTC)
*snort* i doubt it. we're boring.
Brianwc on March 21st, 2006 05:40 pm (UTC)
Yeah, but we are fighting in public, and there are folks out there who said our marriage would never last...
Just meslvr on March 21st, 2006 05:43 pm (UTC)
oh yah... well who says it is? ;)
Brianwc on March 21st, 2006 05:45 pm (UTC)
Well FINE then. *slams door* ;)
Just meslvr on March 21st, 2006 05:46 pm (UTC)
*FINE* (complete with hand gesture)
Brianwc on March 21st, 2006 06:34 pm (UTC)
You're number one too!
Magnanimityashen_butterfly on March 21st, 2006 06:53 pm (UTC)
Aaaah true love.

At least he didn't buy a Demoliton Derby car for $600 when you only had $500 in your account...

Computer parts are worth something..
Tracey Raburn-Clearytcleary on March 22nd, 2006 04:32 am (UTC)
Or buy himself a new cell phone because he "needed" it when what was really needed was 4 new tires on your own truck.
Brian Beckseether on March 21st, 2006 05:12 pm (UTC)
hehehehe

It's the same with my SCSI burner. Since I didn't have a credit card, I managed to con convince Crystal to use her card for the order and that I would pay her back...and we weren't even dating then!

Hmmmmm...I imagine with interest I owe her quite a bit by now. :)
Brianwc on March 21st, 2006 05:16 pm (UTC)
I'm sure you've more than made up for the interest in... other ways...
Magnanimityashen_butterfly on March 21st, 2006 06:53 pm (UTC)
*cough* - dirrrrty.
Brianwc on March 21st, 2006 07:07 pm (UTC)
Your mind went there on its own. I would never imply such a thing! O:)
Just meslvr on March 21st, 2006 05:16 pm (UTC)
See, I was being a nice wife-to-be and buying him something he really wanted for a wedding present. :)

I just want him to remember that. I'm trying to get him to gold plate the old thing and put it on the mantle or something. (not really, but yah, after paying $500 for it...)
